Oral SedationOral SedationLet’s get real for just a minute here and face the fact – the last place any normal person wants to be is sitting in any dental office! If you are afraid, anxious, and fearful of going to the dentist, be assured of this – YOU ARE NOT ALONE! Recent research reveals that more than 30% of Americans avoid dental treatment even when they have pain and discomfort due to fear and anxiety. We understand and you need to know that It does not have to be like that at all. We would like to let you in on a little “secret” that most people just don’t know about– visiting your dentist here in Houston, Texas does not have to be scary or painful. We know that avoiding going to the dentist creates 3 known scenarios
So What is the “Secret”?THE “SECRET” OF ORAL SEDATION DENTISTRY REVEALED AT SCHLEICHER-READ DENTAL GROUP IN HOUSTON, TEXAS. Sedation is any process used to establish a relaxed, easy and calm state through the use of certain medications. Sedation medications (nitrous oxide, anti-anxiety agents, sedatives, etc.) can be used in numerous ways. Typically, in the past, intravenous (IV) sedation using injections directly into the blood vessels – was the predominant form used to achieve a state of sedation with a dental patient. One of the disadvantages to this procedure is that there is a total loss off the ability to communicate with the patient during the procedure and the loss of protective reflexes such and swallowing and gagging that can create problems. Oral Conscious Sedation – If you hate dentist, have a fear of needles, sensitive teeth, or a bad gag reflex, oral sedation may be just the answer for you. Schleicher-Read Dental Group’s sedation dentistry in Houston, Texas allows you to be sedated just enough so that you are unaware of the treatment and are pain free. Oral sedation dentistry is now the most common technique used in the United States to diminish patient fear and anxiety. The technique is simple and does not require needles. Best of all, the medications create such a comfortable experience that most patients do not remember the visit; it is as if they slept through the treatment. Oral Conscious Sedation is the use of pills swallowed by the patient and augmented often with laughing gas (nitrous oxide). This results in a “twilight” sleep that produces a state of profound relaxation and release of anxiety. Patients remain responsive to the dental team and are easily aroused and can talk and co-operate to the dental team during treatment, however, most patients report a complete lack of any memory of the procedure. Oral sedation seems to compress time, making a 3-4 hour procedure seem like just a few minutes. One of the most common phenomenon’s we see routinely is the patient asking “when are you going to start, doc?” And we say “not to worry – we are done with your treatment”! ARE THERE ANY OTHER BENEFITS TO ME AS A PATIENT?Aside from the obvious comfort that we have already discussed, by using oral sedation we are often able to deliver complete and comprehensive care in one visit instead of multiple visits spread out over time. If you have a busy schedule you save time and money by getting everything completed in one or two visits instead of six or eight visits. HOW SAFE IS ORAL SEDATION?Your will be constantly monitored with state of the art blood pressure and pulse oximetry patient monitors just like you see in hospitals, at all times to insure patient safety. Millions of procedures are safely completed each year. Some research suggests that in fact some medical risks may actually increase in many fearful patients by NOT using some form of sedation. This is due to the flood of “fight or flight” hormones that are often released into the body naturally by fearful patients, creating unwanted blood pressure spikes and harmful increases in heart rates.
HOW WILL I FEEL AFTER THE PROCEDURE?Most patients feel sleepy and relaxed and return home and rest. You must have a responsible adult available to drive you home and be with you for 24 hours after the procedure. We have an office pages that allows us to page them 30 minutes before your release so that they do not have to remain in the office during the procedure time. Do not operate machinery or an automobile for 24 hours following any sedation procedure. HOW CAN IF FIND OUT MORE?It’s easy, just call Patty at our office at 713-932-0441 extension #105 and she will expedite a complimentary consultation with our staff to explain how oral sedation will benefit your specific needs. Schleicher-Read Dental Group’s sedation dentistry in Houston, Texas has been the “secret” answer for hundreds of our patients. |
